PACE is represented on the steering committee of the Democracy at a Crossroads National Summit on civic learning, featuring Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor along with hosting partners: iCivics, the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, the Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University, and the Lou Frey Institute.  The event is sponsored by PACE members: McCormick Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation (alongside the Carnegie Corporation of New York).

The event will take place on September 21 in DC.  Registration deadline is September 8; please sign up here.

As its name suggests, the event was inspired by the idea that our democracy has reached a crossroads, and that inspiring champions of innovative civic learning will mean the difference in creating a bright future for our nation and its young people. The summit aims to provide an overview of the current state of civic learning and education, and make the case for new and renewed investment at this moment in time (see more in this in-depth brief).
Increasingly, students and young people are not receiving equitable opportunities for civic learning and education (see more in this fact sheet).  PACE and our members share a belief that creating opportunities for all young people to learn about our system of participatory democracy–and build the knowledge and skills to participate in it–is more critical than ever.   We hope the summit will help usher a sea change of cross-partisan and pragmatic support for innovative civic learning at both the national and state levels from philanthropy, media, and policymakers alike.
