Rockefeller Brothers Fund: Letter from President & CEO

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

Over the past month, I have been dismayed to see threats to civil society that once seemed distant and abstract become tangible and direct. RBF grantees across the globe now face unexpected legal challenges, severe funding cuts, media smear campaigns, and, in the worst cases, intimidation and attacks targeting individual leaders and staff.

Many of you know that I began my career in state government before joining the EastWest Institute, an international NGO, and later co-founding Dēmos, a U.S. nonprofit focused on inclusive democracy. Never did I see these phases of my career in opposition to one another; to the contrary, I valued the deep and constructive symbiosis between democratic government and civil society.

I am appalled by efforts to erode this essential relationship and discredit the work of advocates, activists, artists, scientists, lawyers, teachers, caregivers, civil servants, and others to deliver on the promises of clean air and water, healthy communities, fair economies, and access to opportunity for all.

The Rockefeller Brothers Fund has not been immune to pressure, but we steadfastly stand by our commitments to equity and justice in the United States and globally. We will continue to uphold the critical importance of an independent and flourishing civil society, together with other foundations and partners.

The RBF is ready to be flexible with our current grants as you navigate new challenges. Do not hesitate to reach out to your program contact at the Fund as needed to discuss your organization’s circumstances and explore ways we can adapt to meet your needs.

I have often spoken of philanthropy as the “risk capital” of civil society. That role has never before felt so urgent or so humbling. The RBF is honored to partner with you.

In solidarity,

Stephen Heintz

President and CEO
